Different types of Microwave Oven – 3 types

By

The earliest form of microwave ovens was primarily used to cook simple meals and reheat leftovers.

But with time, thoughtful modifications in their design enabled newer types of microwave ovens to grill, roast, and bake alongside their primary usage.

Different types of Microwave Oven

There are three types of a microwave oven,

  • Solo
  • Grill
  • and Convection

Solo microwave ovens are considered basic or entry-level, Grill microwave ovens are considered the next step up, and Convection microwave ovens are at the top.

In this post, I will discuss in depth the three types of microwave oven classified on the basis of their functionality.

Solo Microwave Oven

Panasonic – Solo Microwave Oven

Solo Microwave Oven is ideal for basic cooking and reheating. It is designed to reheat food and beverages, cook noodles, and defrost frozen foods.

These microwaves can be seen just about anywhere including office break rooms, small apartments, and restaurant kitchens. This is the cheapest of all microwave oven out there.

While you can cook bigger foods, you will not have the same flavor as you will with convection or grill microwaves. Also, solo microwaves at lower wattages may not cook food as evenly as convection or grill microwave ovens.

The oven capacity of solo microwaves ranges from 0.5 – 2.5 cubic feet. For reference, 0.5 cubic feet is a little more than a gallon of milk, which is not big enough to cook most things.

Grill Microwave Oven

Bajaj – Grill Microwave Oven

Grill Microwave Oven can be used to grill meat and veggies besides reheating. A grill microwave oven can do everything a solo microwave can do plus grill pizza, chicken, and fish.

It can grill food with a special grill heater and additional accessories. These special grilling coils allow food to be grilled, toasted, and roasted.

There are slightly more expensive than solo microwaves, but must less expensive than convection microwaves.

Grill microwaves are appropriate for just about any kind of food and any size of food. The only exception is these microwaves are the best at baking.

The oven capacity for grill microwaves is a little smaller than solo microwaves. The oven capacity for grill microwaves ranges between 1 and 2.5 cubic feet.

Convection Microwave Oven

Samsung – Convection Microwave Oven

Convection Microwave Oven can be used for baking and grilling besides reheating. It includes all of the cooking options of solo and grill microwaves and has the ability to bake foods.

This microwave uses a different heater and fan combination to cook all of the foods listed plus more. It works by pushing heat through the microwave using a fan, that creates a better cooking environment.

In addition to making pizza and chicken, convection microwaves can be used to bake cookies, cakes, and bread. Convection microwaves are basically little ovens that cook different foods faster.

convection microwave oven can heat, grill, brown, and bake with a convection microwave. It has a defrost option too.

The oven capacity for convection microwaves is similar to the sizes of grill microwaves. Convection microwaves range from 1 cubic foot to over 2.0 cubic feet of cooking space.

You can check the Panasonic NN-CT353BFDG convection microwave oven. Which is the best convection microwave oven based on its functionality and budget.

However, there are other two types of microwave ovens which are not majorly used,

  1. Over the Range Microwave Oven
  2. Built-in Microwave Oven

Over-the-Range Microwave Oven

These are installed over the stovetop and double as a range hood. Most over range microwaves come in standard 27″ or 30″ widths.

Some people prefer to opt for an over-the-range microwave to clear some counter space while others to avoid installing a dedicated range hood.

Built-in Microwave Oven

Meant to be installed in custom cabinetry cutouts. This microwave oven needs no clearance.

With a built-in microwave, that is predominantly installed near eye-level, you access the cooking cavity from the front.

Conclusion

What type of microwave do you own?

Were you aware that there are 3 different types of a microwave oven that are majorly used? Do you have a positive experience with a grill or convection microwave?
